Yesterday and again today I'm blown away by all the football games that are being televised all around the country. Stadium after stadium are filled to capacity with people in the stands cheering on their team. To add to that - there's the frenzy of who will be playing in the World Series. So baseball fans are focused on their hometown teams and just ignore what's going on in the rest of the world around them.
Those same people are oblivious to what's been going on around the country with respect to ICE, deportations, raids on American citizens, tear gas, flash bangs, etc - with the military dress, face masks, wielding guns and treating American people like cattle.
And this is not just the (criminals) that is supposedly the reason that they were sent into these cities. They are taking out citizens, elderly, children. They are destroying their living quarters. They are creating a situation of complete fear.
As I thought about this - I pondered this thought. How do you make these fans realize that they are being taken advantage of by keeping their focus on sports and away from politics.
So I came up with this idea. A complete walkout by all athletes from ALL sports around the country - until Congress and this Administration end this political war they're having and come to their senses that a Democracy is the only way to go.
Think about it. If all athletes (ALL SPORTS) just walked off their teams and refused to play - how that would impact on this nation.
Think of the pressure on the colleges that rely on money to fund their programs. Think of the networks that televise these games. Think of the revenue that so many businesses (including the betting houses) would be losing - if there was a complete shutdown of all sports. Think of all the businesses that rely on 'sports money' to make a living. Merch. Bars. Food. Sporting Goods. etc.
I think it would certainly get the attention of those people that fill up those stadiums and have a trickle down effect on all businesses that are making money off these same sports.
So that's my idea. ALL ATHLETES SHOULD A GO ON STRIKE & REFUSE TO PLAY UNTIL THIS NATION CAN FUNCTION AGAIN AS THE GREAT DEMOCRACY THAT THIS NATIONS FOUNDER"S ENVISIONED.
How long do you think people could live without their sports. It would certainly get millions of Americans focused on the problems at hand versus which team will wind up on top.
And I welcome them sending the military to the Super Bowl and Bad Bunny for all the world to see how really screwed up the people that are running this government are.

Hit them where it hurts the most. Money, Money, Money!!! And the risk of not continuing to rake it in or maybe even losing it big-ly.

(26,252 posts)the way things are shaping up around this country today - we have to be aware that the Repugs will do anything to rig, cheat and steal upcoming elections.
We have to put the fear in them (the Repugs) - that with a moratorium on SPORTS - no sporting activity of any kind -will incite millions of voters (that really don't pay attention to politics and use sports as a diversion) to finally realize that their very lives are being harmed by whats going on in Washington D.C.
They are going to get involved. They will take heed - because a great part of their very existence will be missing.
When millions of Americans become aware of the impact on their lives they will come out and vote.
It will make it very difficult for them to steal the elections. They will be outnumbered and as such out voted. Or as I like to say - Voted Out!!!

(11,473 posts)We'll know more when polls start coming out during primaries-- which are only a few months away. If Democrats look good in those polls, that'll put pressure on GOPers. If not, well we're screwed.

(26,252 posts)the way Repugs are acting right now - and doing all the crazy stuff that you would think not help them win an election - they are acting like it's in the bag. It's a done deed. We got it covered.
I don't trust anything that comes out of their mouths. We've been bamboozled too many times already - and I'm worried that if we rely only on the hope that we'll take the House, Senate or both - we'll be crying in our beer the day after the election.

(26,252 posts)and my idea is to use Sports and an athlete walk-out to apply - what I think is a maximum amount of pressure.
Fans will be pissed. Businesses that feed off of sports - will be pissed. Media will be pissed (big loss of revenue for them). I'm hoping that even the billionaire's that own many of the teams - will be feeling the hurt in their pocketbook.
When I say 'athlete walk-out' - I'm talking athlete's at all levels, Pro, Amateur. College (all sports). High School.
I believe athlete's can wield a lot of power and as such - apply pressure.

(4,352 posts)Democratic party to put a moratorium on sports. But, a large segment of the population is addicted to sports. It is very much socially encouraged to be addicted to sports. It isn't new, Juvenal wrote about it 2,000 years ago. In the US over the last century we have given up our citizenship to become consumers. And one of the chief products of consumption is sports.
When an addict has the subject of their addiction taken away they rarely thank the one who removed their addiction. If the Democratic party was able to put a moratorium on sports they would never win another election in the country. They would forever be the party which "took away your sportsball".

... Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.

(4,352 posts)that the ignorant and apathetic third of the country will wake up. One is if their circuses are interrupted and the other is if their bread is interrupted.
I think that it is almost impossible that there would be a serious interruption in the circuses. I think that it is almost certain that there will be a serious interruption in the bread.
But remember, these people are ignorant and apathetic. They haven't been paying attention. They don't know where we are, they don't know how we got here.
When they are involuntarily awakened because they have lost their jobs, prices are still inflating, and the economy has tanked and they can't get a new job, they will be scared and angry.
They will be easy prey for a Strong Leader with quick and easy answers, even if those answers are lies. The Democratic party must be ready with strong and simple messages to educate these scared, angry, and ignorant, but no longer apathetic voters.

(26,252 posts)God knows that both Parties need to feel the pressure of such a moratorium.
I would like to see a grassroots campaign initiated and suggested by the 'athlete's' themselves.
I know - I know - I'm thinking Pollyannish - bet my feeling is we need to think out of the box - because the way things are going right now - we don' have much time left. Already there has been too much damage done to our Democracy.

(74,821 posts)I'm aware of everything that's going on & I'm watching football right now, and my Cubs are in the playoffs.
I fear this is a pernicious root of why liberals get short shrift from the middle of the road voters.
It's so smug & condescending. It just have to be off-putting to a decent number of people.

(650 posts)are not going to risk being in breach of their multi-million contracts by walking out. No way in Hell.

(26,252 posts)won't have a business if they enforce those contracts and together the players - play hard ball with them.
This plan only works if people stick together. We've learned that some strikes are very successful.
