The House GOPs political arm last week successfully pressured a liberal group to modify political ads targeting three battleground Republican incumbents, arguing that language in the TV spots was inaccurate.
The alterations to the ads were ultimately minor, and a new version of the TV spots continued to run after the changes were made. But officials at the National Republican Congressional Committee, which led the pressure effort, say their success is evidence theyll be able to deflect some attacks from Democrats in next years midterms.
At issue were three ads from Environmental Defense Fund Action focusing on rising costs and cuts to Medicaid in this years Republican tax law. The ads were running against Republican Reps. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin and Tom Barrett of Michigan.
NRCC officials objected to language in the ads that said the lawmakers had forced one-quarter of nursing homes to close. In three letters from late last month obtained by NOTUS, the NRCCs counsel asked TV stations located in the congressmens districts to take down the ads, saying that the nursing-homes figure was inaccurate.

(1,861 posts)Every mailer, every ad on tv, they are making up bullshit figures, lying their asses off, distorting their opponents records, etc. And they won't stop, and nobody will make them stop. These local broadcasters will do what NRCC's lawyers ask, and will refuse to do it when lawyers representing Dems ask, and the GQP lies will be far more egregious.

(18,589 posts)took them down. They could submit the new ads and file a suit against the tv station. They should have no problem producing repuke ads that a full of lies.

(15,704 posts)we were told that the station could not change or refuse to air political ads. No matter what kind of claim or absolute lie, the spot had to run like the way it was delivered.
But that was then. It seems a lot of the business has become unrecognizable from when I was in it. I was mutating even as I was still working in it. Probably one of the reasons I took early retirement and bailed out.
