Nobel Committee sends a not-so-subtle message to Trump:Venezuelan Maria Machado wins for promoting DEMOCRACY

Nobel peace prize 2025 live: María Corina Machado wins for work promoting democratic rights in Venezuela

US president had been conducting campaign to influence prize committee. This live blog is closed

Venezuelan opposition politician María Corina Machado has won the Nobel peace prize.

The committee commended Machado as a “brave and committed champion of peace” who “keeps the flame of democracy burning during a growing darkness”.

Jørgen Watne Frydnes, the leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, made the announcement at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.

This year’s award committee has been under particular scrutiny after an intense public and private campaign by Donald Trump. The US president has been openly envious that four of his predecessors, including Barack Obama, received the award.

Trump’s outbursts have caused concern in Norway about the risk of retaliation if the 79-year-old did not get what is often considered the world’s most prestigious award.

he's the antithesis of what the Nobel stands for. It's hard to name one non-fictional thing he's ever done to earn it.

Guess sinking and killing "supposed Venezuelan drug trafficers" in international waters didn't help.

I read a list of the top 10 candidates by someone in Norway who follows this stuff, and Trump wasn't even on the list.

He does nothing but try to rile up his base and promote dissent in his own country. The Portland and Chicago news says it all. He knows nothing about the meaning of the word “peace”.

That plan may bring temporary peace before Netanyahu or Hamas blows it up, but it doesn’t offer many democratic rights to Palestinians if Israel keeps control of all Gaza and West Bank Palestinians.

is she a friend of Autocrats?

from a different Guardian article. The last sentence just kinda gets slipped in there.

"Some Venezuelans distrust her as a result of thinly veiled calls for a foreign military intervention to unseat Maduro in the past. She argued in 2019 that only a “a real, credible severe and imminent threat” of the use of international force would convince Maduro to leave power.

Others are suspicious of her ties to radical rightwing politicians such as Trump and Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro."

We've had 9 months of uninterrupted slaughter where Trump has done nothing but encourage the slaughter.

Now there's a deal to get the remaining 48 hostages back (only 20 still alive) in exchange for a partial cease fire and not total withdrawal. The deal will fall apart next week after the hostages are returned because the real plan is to kill or eject every man woman and child from Gaza so Bibi and Trump can sell of their land to their real estate developer financiers.
