Mark Zuckerberg is said to have started work on Koolau Ranch, his sprawling 1,400-acre compound on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, as far back as 2014.
It is set to include a shelter, complete with its own energy and food supplies, though the carpenters and electricians working on the site were banned from talking about it by non-disclosure agreements, according to a report by Wired magazine.
A six-foot wall blocked the project from view of a nearby road.
Asked last year if he was creating a doomsday bunker, the Facebook founder gave a flat "no". The underground space spanning some 5,000 square feet is, he explained, "just like a little shelter, it's like a basement".

(68,300 posts)He's one of the richest people in the world and he knows the billionaires all have targets on their backs. He probably can't go out in public without getting yelled at.
He's become isolated and paranoid. Look what happened to Howard Hughes. Musk is behaving the same way.

(3,476 posts)Her commentary explained how all the wealthy knew the consequences of their greed on the environment and economies. That force was beyond their control. Their attitude was to keep at it knowing they could enjoy themselves as it all came to a head.
We all see it coming, but many of us say the same thing.
When our leaders are controlled by the money, our voices don't hold much sway.
Fight back where we can, bailing might be enough to at least wreck on shore.

Possibly. But if that happens, we unwashed masses are doomed anyway.
It's more likely, in my opinion, that we have the same stupid shit we've been dealing with, just more of it.
I'm not really a prepper, but my household approaches the coming bad times with more of the Scout Motto attitude and the Church of LDS pragmatism.
I'd definitely be maintaining buffers in case there is an interruption in utilities and the distribution of supplies. Having an alternative local heating source in the winter has always been good practice. Toiletries are easy enough to stockpile, and a plan to acquire, or a supply of, fresh water is important.
Interruptions in medical supplies are also a problem.

(10,626 posts)If bunkers and isolation are necessary, what good will their money be?
They need to watch The Walking Dead or Fallout that follow this kind of hubris to its logical conclusion. They will have no more power than anyone else if things go that far south. Their compounds will be up for grabs.

(1,635 posts)Breathable air? We take it for granted.
It's a funny thing, that atmosphere. Seems we can get along with making water (a bit expensive) and growing food (inside is tougher and not as productive) but that atmosphere thingy is maybe more important because it's really everywhere. There are filters to try to keep out the bad stuff, but sooner or later those need changed since they don't last forever. AND...some of the stuff in the "atmosphere" may not be able to be filtered out, no matter how hard you try. Oh, people of means maybe can do it for longer than the rest of us, but in the end, when you can't breathe, nothing else matters.
If you live underground, you need to bring in "air" and that air can be filtered...to an extent. Sometimes things get into the "air" that nothing can stop or remove. Living in a billion dollar bunker, you are more dependent on clean air or water or even food right away. And if something causes problems with food and water those can be usually be controlled. But bad things in the air can't always be removed or controlled. See Covid 2020!
So while a billion dollar bunker may be a temporary reprieve from above ground catastrophe, there's no getting away from needing "air"...clean, SAFE, air and if something was carried by that air into a billion dollar bunker that happens to not be filterable or controlled and can't be easily removed or whatever, then nothing else really does matter.
Not indoor tennis courts...parties...eating...sleeping...or living.
And sometimes, bad stuff in the air isn't natural.

Unfortunately, our technology is advancing much faster than our common sense.
