How much the typical worker makes at 30 top retailers, from Amazon to Walmart

Here's the median wage for workers at 30 retail companies, listed from lowest to highest. I don't know how most of these folks get by.

3. Hurrah for Costco.

They topped the list at $47k. And their prices are low. And they have a reputation for treating their employees very well.

I'm awfully glad I have my Costco membership. I'll use it in preference to other retailers every chance I get.

5. Full time Costco employees averaged $64,000

Seems like a pretty decent wage. Costco is my main shopping site for sure. And their prices for what I buy remain pretty low.

4. Wow. Thanks. We'll be boycotted Black Friday this year. This morning, as I'll be off...

...black Friday, but all these service people will not.

It hurts to think of them deprived of the 4 day weekend, a little thing, a trivial thing, but disturbing all the same.

When we were young, my wife worked in hospital settings (as I did before I met her).

She worked many holidays, but that was justifiable. Serving consumerism strikes me as less so.

6. $26/hour to work

at Texas Roadhouse is good money. Same goes for $25/hour at Williams-Sonoma.

I never made more than $15.50 an hour working in retail as recently as early 2020.

8. My daughter works at Whole Foods part time

She gets paid 15.00 an hour and has health insurance through ACA, which has been a blessing to working people. I draw social security. I'm 77. We live together in a home we own. She's looking for full time work, but it's not easy to find.

9. Most of these are for part-time.

However, I would challenge anyone who's bothered by these numbers (as we should be) to also stop using the gig economy. If you use Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, etc., you are helping companies whose workers sometimes aren't even considered employees and who almost certainly don't get benefits. I know people who consistently push for a higher minimum wage, press for more housing, but then take Uber use DoorDash, and stay at Airbnbs, all without wiggling an eyelash.

11. I am surprised Aldi's or Trader Joe's are not on the list.

I have read where Aldi’s pays quite well and their benefits package was good. Of course, they are German owned. don’t know that much about Trader Joe’s though.

12. Loyal Costco customer for nearly 40 years for precisely this reason.

They treat their employees decently.
The fact that they generally have good value (good quality/reasonable price) is a plus.
