The movie was about a real serial killer In Russia.

Based on the true story of a Russian serial killer who, over many years, claimed victim to over 50 people. His victims were mostly under the age of 17. In what was then a communists state, the police investigations were hampered by bureaucracy, incompetence and those in power. The story is told from the viewpoint of the detective in charge of the case.

Read Tom Rob Smith's Child 44. Never quite made it through the movie though. It's a story about a MKB agent investigating a child serial killer. Whe the doctrine was there was no such thing as murder. So it was hard for him to investigate while risking himself losing everything for going against doctrine. Real page turner.

Donald Sutherland is the Soviet bureaucrat that tries to help the investigator Stephen Rea. At one point he says:

To ask for more men or computers, for that matter, is to admit to our superiors in Moscow that we're overwhelmed. Which they'll never do. To ask the FBI for help is to admit to the West that we are behind them in both forensic technique and in managing information. Which they would never do. And to publicize the case is to admit that such crimes exist in the Soviet Union. Which is one thing they would rather die than do, to publicly admit that anything is wrong.

And Max von Sydow, as always, is absolutely superb in it.

One of the few hard-to-find movies I still own on DVD, I highly recommend it. You can watch the entire move here or on YouTube for free...
