...But the Earth is a SPHERE.
As the moon passes behind the Earth, it makes a curved shadow. The ONLY WAY you can create a curved shadow is with a round object.
Humans have known this for thousands of years, yet in 2026 we are still battling idiots who think the Earth is flat.

Image was captured around 3am in Arizona. Unable to get decent pictures of the "blood moon" due to high clouds.
But enjoy this photo of the start of the full lunar eclipse!

(5,571 posts)I've never met a person who believes the world is flat, nor have I met a person who has met someone who believes the world is flat. In fact, I've never met a person who claims to have met a person who claims to have met a person who believes the world is flat.
I'm not convinced that such people even exist, and even if there are people who purport to believe that, they could just be expressing some philosophical, Socratic, point about epistemology along the lines of "the only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing".

They are absolutely impossible to talk to.

(595 posts)it says something about the Earth being flat. And it's only 6000 years old. And dinosaurs coexisted with humans. And all land on Earth was submerged in water. Those guided by blind faith need no proof other than their guiding manuscript.

(3,986 posts)The moronic British clergymen who came up with the 6000 year old earth based on the Hebrew texts would be laughed at by every Hebrew scholar and Rabbi on Earth for thousands of years.
He took the bad English translation and came up with that number.
As for the Earth being flat, just not addressed.

(595 posts)park. Thank you for educating me. Apparently, there's a gap between what the bible says and how people interpret it.
I might be wrong about this also. The bible has been translated and retranslated from languages that no longer exist. It's like that classroom exercise where the first kid whispers something into the ear of the kid next to him. That kid turns to the kid on the other side and paraphrase what he thought he heard. By the time it gets to the tenth kid in the chain, the original statement is lost. What are your thoughts about that? I'm genuinely curious, not trying to make trouble.

(7,235 posts)The "Answers in Genesis" clown who built that ridicuous park.
He had a debate with Bill Nye some years ago. Bill Nye, the "Science Guy" was an educator, not a scientist, who nonetheless eviscerated Ham in a debate about the bible and the ark. It's well worth a look:
Unfortunately, the dabate was held at the "Ark Encounter", so the audience was made up of believers, so one sided to start.
Nye probably changed very few minds.

(7,235 posts)Also, eclipses cannot be explained above a flat Earth, since everyone on the planet sees the same moon at the same time.
And the moon is inverted in the southern hemisphere. That can only be explained when viewed from a globe.

(3,453 posts)They really dont believe the Earth is flat.
Its more of a question everything mindset, dont believe something unless you see it or experience it for yourself.

body of gas will hold. That has never been proven false in the 164 years after that was shown
to be the case and yet we have millions of Americans who claim that the case of global warming
hasnt been proven. Sadly a lot more of Americans believe that crap then that the earth is flat.

I went on there to laugh at the rubes, but once there, I realized these people had conspiracy theory about EVERYTHING!
The 'lunatic fringe' is a lot larger (and scarier) than I ever realized!
