I never saw anyone kick someone's ass and chew them a new one at the same time.
Wow Tillis just kicked Noem to the curb.

Totally a thing of beauty.

(53,368 posts)One, Western NC is still waiting for money from a storm that happened in 2024. Our reimbursement rate was lower than most other storms. Trump promised repeatedly that we would be getting money and none arrived.
Two, Operation Charlotte's web and a similar one in Raleigh and Durham has pissed him off.
Three, Trump forced him to not run for reelection after he refused to vote for the BBB.

(69,242 posts)He's a complex mix. I'm glad to hear he stood up to Noem - I'll have to watch.
Most of the time I have nothing but contempt for Tillis. He's in the Susan Collins category - often concerned but rarely up to a fight.
He's announced that he won't run again so now he supposedly can "vote his conscience" but that usually disappoints. He's not going to tick off potential lobbying contracts.
My biggest beef with Tillis is that he didn't just vote to nominate RFK, Jr., he continues to actively praise that villain.
NC is highly dependent on migrant labor, both in the coastal plain (poultry, pork, shellfish processing; tobacco, cotton, vegetable harvesting) and in the mountainous west (apples and other harvesting), so nobody wants ICE here. It's not a moral position for Tillis, it's pragmatic.
Now I'm going to watch him tear into Noem. I'll enjoy that.
Irish_Dem
(80,755 posts)There may be some backstory of a pragmatic nature.
But Tillis was on fire screaming at the top of his lungs and threatening dire
consequences.
It was personal to him.
Maybe he has lost a lot of money, or been threatened in the past.
IDK.
yardwork
(69,242 posts)It's personal. On one level he's clearly offended by her cosplaying "farming" but it's got to be more.
Dsc here mentioned the lack of funding for relief in western NC after Hurricane Helene. Most of the victims of that storm are Republicans and Trump won NC partly by promising to help, which he hasn't.
It might be something we don't know, too. Trump also won NC by promising the Lumbee in Robeson County federal tribal recognition, which they just got. That means they can build casinos. The Cherokee in western NC are unhappy about this. There's a lot going on behind the scenes. The GOP in NC is heavily into gambling enterprises, and I suspect that Tillis's next job will be as a lobbyist for casinos. Maybe Noem is interfering with that somehow.
Irish_Dem
(80,755 posts)He has been threatened, blocked, stymied in some way.

Irish_Dem
(80,755 posts)I could be wrong.
But we know he doesn't care about anyone else.
And he doesn't care if Americans are being killed by ICE.
He could not care less if Noem killed her puppy.
And his rage looked personal to me. His behavior didn't match
the event.
After 40 years of being a therapist, it makes you go hmmmm....
yardwork
(69,242 posts)Apparently Tillis sent her a detailed letter a month ago demanding answers about ICE and FEMA relief and she ignored him.
Also, our other R senator, Budd, has been on Noem about the hurricane relief, and she's been ignoring him, too.
Two old-fashioned conservative southern men being ignored by a woman...that helps explain the rage.
Also, Tillis says he's mad at Noem for making ICE look bad, because he's in favor of Trump's immigration policies and she's messing up public opinion with her incompetence. (I can imagine him behind the scenes. "Stupid woman. She's screwing this up with her incompetence." )
Sounds like this is at least partly due to old-fashioned sexist rage.
I also detect panic, fear and rage that Trump has started yet another war that will involve a lot of North Carolinians. NC has a lot of military bases.

Not about what your 'party' wants - not about who your $$$-gods are - and even not about what a 'majority' in your home state/district 'wants' - but what YOU KNOW to be right according to the CONSTITUTION - you know, RULES & LAWS that were made to (choking here......) MAKE AMERICA GREAT!

Edited: I just watched the clip. He's offended by ICE Barbie cosplaying being a "farmer." It is personal.
Editing again: Tillis's upbringing is different than I thought. From wiki:
Following his 1978 graduation from high school, Tillis left home to get a job.[11] He then attended Chattanooga State Community College before receiving a Bachelor of Science in technology management from the University of Maryland University College in 1986.[9][11][12]

I am kind of shocked at all the cheering for him. It seems to me that this is the literal LEAST he could do to, and will have ZERO impact as far as changing anything.
And I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have spoken that way to a man.

(119 posts)The first minute of the clip shows that he is still a xenophobic ASS who has a very casual relationship with the truth.
In my opinion, this is him trying to polish his version of Republicanism (100% racist, %100 misogynist, 100% classist, but 30% less flat-out insane than MAGA) ahead of the primary to fill his seat.
Looking tough on Noem is an easy and basically risk-free way to play "maverick" while actually doing ZERO to deal with the problem.
Calling for her resignation is weak sauce. He should be calling on his party members in the House to impeach her.
