(22,626 posts)It's like that on this side of the country too. Montreal is a couple hours drive away and there's a ton of family ties between Vermont and Quebec. They know enough about US politics to realize the vast majority of us up here didn't do this.

(42,263 posts)So it's a good guess that the Americans who visit there will be polite and (hopefully) appreciative.
I've visited Canada twice in my lifetime not counting quick daytrips to Niagara Falls, and I'd love to take a long vacation and really spend some quality time there.

May we all live long, healthy lives, to live to see this as a distant memory.

(1,309 posts)you can now apply for citizenship. They just changed the rules, and it doesn't matter how many generations back your Canadian ancestor was.

(1,309 posts)My late husband and I wanted to emigrate to Canada, but, alas, when he was alive they hadn't yet changed the rules, and we weren't eligible. So we'd listen to this song instead.

(682 posts)that my Grandmother on my Mother's side was born in Ontario and my Grandfather on my Fathers side was born in Manitoba.
I'm not liking the way things are looking with the Republican gerrymandering etc. We have the documantation for my Grandmother. Still looking for some for my Grandfather. Maybe Canada is a possibility for me since this country is rapidly flushing itself down the shitter under Trump and the Repukes.

We have ice here but it's fun to skate on it. Less fun to drive on it though except on a snowmobile (not on a frozen river or lake).
Welcome!

(12,575 posts)They were originally hesitant to tell people on the trail or the locals they were American. But they said everyone they've met has been amazingly friendly and sympathetic, even saddened about what's happening here, as well as hugely supportive of American resistance to Trump's ugly, destructive Administration.
It was heartening to hear. Gives me hope for the future once we clean out the barn.

(11,408 posts)Please Dont Give Up On Us (A Letter to Our Allies) is a powerful anti-Trump protest song inspired by an opinion piece from Robert Reich, delivering an emotional message from Americans who oppose Donald Trump, MAGA extremism, and the authoritarian direction of the current administration. Framed as a heartfelt letter to the world, this song speaks directly to U.S. allies, urging them not to confuse the actions of one leader with the values of millions who are actively resisting, protesting, and fighting to defend democracy, climate action, human rights, and global cooperation. Blending poignant lyrics with a moving melody, this political resistance anthem captures the frustration, shame, and determination felt by those standing against Trump, the Republican enablers in Congress, and the erosion of democratic norms. If youre looking for anti-Trump music, protest songs 2026, or songs about resisting authoritarianism and defending democracy, this track is a must-listen and a call to solidarity.
