The luxury of inattention.

The current focus on gas prices, in the media and by extension, in everyday conversations, points to an embarrassing truth about American society. Liberals are engaged in a collective exercise in eye-rolling when MAGA acquaintances and influencers complain about Trump's "handling of the economy" and the higher gas prices that we all must endure as a consequence.

The unasked question is: how could anyone possibly be surprised? My answer is: we live in an age in which Americans are usually able to bask in the luxury of inattention to details that don't affect themselves personally. While Trump's long record of incompetence, self-absorption, and corruption should have been obvious to all Americans, it was not disqualifying to millions who expected no disruption to their personal lives. Their lives and ours have now been thoroughly disrupted and worse is surely on the way.

In a country guided by responsible adults, this would be a wakeup call and lead to changed behavior...
