nothing got done. Maybe there was too much testosterone in the room? Too much dick measuring? Maybe they would have done better had they selected a woman with experience in diplomacy to come help break the ice?
Anyway you look at it, Trump's meritocracy method was a mess.

I saw this summary/analysis here yesterday
But, in reality, Trump has left with zero tangible progress or diplomatic achievements. He failed to stand up to China on Taiwan or rare earth minerals, sold out American farmers, and secured only one deal, which fell short of expectations and tanked Boeings stock price.

(22,684 posts)The internal propaganda for Xi was more than worth it. "Look at the stupid Americans! Not so scary, eh?" Censors actually let Chinese online comments run wild. That doesn't usually happen. Really ever.

Roll out the red carpet and treat him like he's a legitimate world leader, i.e., an equal, and Trump will do anything for you. A kibosh on China tariffs at least for a while. But nothing on the Chinese side was formally agreed to, so the US gets nada. Plus, the subtle insults were priceless and have foreign governments the world over chuckling at the orange moron and the once proud superpower stupid and soft enough to elect him. The US is now a laughing stock globally and China's prestige as an alternative grows.
So no, it wasn't a failure. It just depends on who's perspective you're looking from.

(2,882 posts)It's about what he can do for him. What we see as failure is what we're meant to see.
The titans of industry were present, introductions were made courtesy of American taxpayers. Business and relationships have been strained in the recent past. But I bet those waters are calmer now. And like most sales people, because that's what the Felon is, they get a commission for doing their job.
Pay more attention to what you don't see. Note: that was a very long way to travel for such a short visit. Nothing of diplomatic note occurred. So what did take place. And coincidentally, Putin will be visiting shortly.
Much to ponder. But, failed trip? I doubt it.
