was Eisenhower. Nixon gained the office by treasonous means and went out in disgrace. The Reagans ran the most corrupt administrations in the modern era, up to that point, and paved the way for the excesses we have seen from the Republican Party thereafter. I say "Reagans" because Nancy ended up having to complete St. Ronnie's second term, which ended with a tripling of the national debt and set the stage for the GOP debt escalations that have run rampant ever since. The Republicans no longer even attempt to govern for the majority of Americans and use wedge issues to keep their base in line. All this made Trump possible, and if we survive his assault on democracy it will be a small miracle.
