(9,057 posts)until he rots to the bone because if that ghoul is pronounced dead, the governor of Kentucky can temporarily appoint someone to take his seat..and this is where it gets very interesting the governor of Kentucky is none other than Andy Beshear a DEMOCFRAT!!!!

(9,506 posts)Ky requires a special election now, with no interim appointment.

(9,057 posts)stripping the governor of the power to appointment a replacement specifically because McConnell was old and Beshear was a Democrat..

(3,042 posts)With the law and the Kentucky constitution. According to Beshear the constitution says that he can appoint a replacement, Senator.

(643 posts)But given that we are 6 months from his replacement being seated regardless, I think the best we could hope for would be to just not fill it at all until then.
Getting that seat for a few months wouldn't really change the math of the Senate other than take 1 vote away from R's, which would be that same if it were filled with a Democrat or just empty. Republicans would still need 50 votes for anything, which they still need now.

(6,492 posts)If he passes or leaves office Kentucky has to hold a special election. The governor has between 80-150 days to schedule the election. Moscow Mitch's seat is up for election in Nov. If he died today, Kentucky could run out the clock and not have a special election until December. So basically Mitch either won't be voting as the Senator of Kentucky or his seat will remain vacant until January.

(2,374 posts)The story was, close election, 1800s or early 1900s, one candidate stops public appearances a few days before Election Day, surrogates continue a vigorous campaign, he wins narrowly, then the morning after the election the local party bosses announced he had passed away during celebration in the wee hours. That meant the party could appoint a replacement. The other party claimed he'd actually died and his body was kept on ice until after the voting was done.
I can't remember which party was which or even rough dates, just part of the local color they incorporated into the program. So it wouldn't be the first time that news of a politician being mortal got suppressed for a few days while certain arrangements were made
