Florida Republican Neal Dunn will retire from Congress

Source: The Hill

01/13/26 10:58 AM ET

Rep. Neal Dunn (R-Fla.) on Tuesday said he would retire from Congress, forgoing a reelection bid and further weakening the Republican House majority.

“After much prayerful consideration and discussion with my family, I have decided not to seek re-election to the United States House of Representatives. This will conclude my service after five meaningful terms representing the people of Florida’s Second Congressional District…” Dunn said in a Tuesday post on X.

“The time has come to pass the torch to new conservative leaders, return home to Panama City, and spend more precious time with my family and our beloved grandchildren. I am deeply grateful for your trust, support, and prayers over these years,” he added.

His announcement follows quickly after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) vacated her seat in the middle of her term last week. In addition to Dunn, over two dozen GOP lawmakers in the lower chamber will not seek reelection, including Reps. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas), Wesley Hunt, (R-Texas), Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa), David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) and Thomas Tiffany (R-Wis.).

NPR has a running tally here (and they just added today's announcement) - A record number of congressional lawmakers aren't running for reelection in 2026. Here's the list

Including this latest, that would make it 11 Senators and 47 House members.

3. So is he stepping down now, or just not running for re-election in November?

The full article implies the latter. Stepping down now would make a much bigger difference than waiting until November to leave, obviously.

Conservatismsman Dunn,

I see that you are not planning to run for re-election. I’ve looked at your voting record, and must say it is nothing to be proud of: a spineless sycophantic back-bencher who has not served his constituents well. If you have any shame for the harm you have caused, I have a suggestion for you. Rather than continuing to enable the convicted felon and adjudicated sexual abuser as he goes about his chaotic destruction of our country, switch parties immediately. The opposition stands ready to begin the remediation process and reign in President Pedo’s lawlessness. You can maintain your vaunted “conservatism” by not supporting policies that you consider liberal overreach, but by breaking MAGA Mike’s stranglehold on you and your colleagues, at least some corrective measures can begin NOW, not 11 months down the road. If you consider the damage President Pedo has done in a single year, there is grave concern—on both sides of the political aisle—that our democracy may not survive another 11 months. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Could have been editorial compromise to rush the story out first. Or "further weakening the House majority" could have been inserted to create artificial DRAMA. It could theoretically weaken the current majority if Dumm (ooops) no longer feels beholden to maga orthodoxy in votes going forward, but that would be speculation.

OK. Unnecessary analysis done. BC out.

"Dunn's Dispatch" emails, I somehow got them. Am still getting them, though he doesn't represent my county anymore. His claim to fame is that he was a Navy specialist in male urology. So he was smart, but nonetheless a devout Repug.

Spare me. Please. As if things aren't bad enough, DeSatan gave his final address to our Fla Legislators this a.m. Bragged endlessly. Hope he disappears into the mist of history... and takes his wife with him.
