The U.S. is ending Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals and set a March 17 deadline for them to leave the country, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said.
The move came without an official announcement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or a notice in the Federal Register on Tuesday morning, with the latter generally required to officially terminate TPS. DHS later confirmed the decision to Newsweek but did not provide further background.
Why It Matters
The move comes amid intense focus on the Somali community over the multibillion-dollar Minnesota fraud scandal. President Donald Trump has disparaged Somali people, saying he does not want them in the country.
TPS has been a focus of the Trump administration, with officials arguing that the program has been abused and unnecessarily extended for multiple countries. Efforts to terminate TPS have been met with legal challenges, with immigrants saying they fear returning to their home countries, often arguing that conditions have not improved as the State Department claims.
