Bank of America settles lawsuit from Jeffrey Epstein accusers, scuttling Leon Black deposition

Source: Business Insider

Bank of America settled a proposed class-action lawsuit from Jeffrey Epstein accusers who alleged the bank facilitated the now-dead pedophile's sex-trafficking operation, court records show.

Lawyers for the bank and a group of Epstein accusers told the judge overseeing the case during a pretrial conference last week that they "reached a settlement in principle," according to a Monday update to the case's docket. The terms of the settlement were not made public.

US District Judge Jed Rakoff, who is overseeing the case, gave a March 27 deadline for the parties to file public documents laying out the settlement's terms, and an April 2 hearing to decide whether to approve them.

"The women entrapped and abused by Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell started a monumental reckoning with their brave voices and fearlessness," Sigrid McCawley, an attorney at Boies Schiller Flexner representing the Epstein accusers, said in a comment. "The road to justice for these women has been long and trying. Today's resolution of the case against Bank of America is one more step on the road to much deserved justice."

mentions the financial aspect but not a word about black being named by survivors as a perpetrator of abuse. Yes, the lawsuit was focused on the role of BofA in moving funds for Epstein but there should have been at least a reference to the multiple, credible allegations of vile actions on his part.

Fortunately he's still scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee.

From ABC News - Bank of America reaches proposed, non-binding settlement in suit alleging it aided Jeffrey Epstein's crimes

(snip)

Though the terms of the settlement are unknown, a proposed resolution of the case would likely scuttle an upcoming deposition of Apollo Global Management co-founder Leon Black, who was scheduled to sit for questioning on March 26. Black resigned from his role at Apollo in 2021 after an inquiry into his relationship with Epstein, which found that Black paid Epstein $158 million for tax and estate planning advice.

Leon Black Testimony Cancelled

The settlement being reached in the Bank of America case also means billionaire Leon Black, a known Epstein associate, will not have to testify about his financial ties to Epstein. The court had previously ordered Black to be deposed as part of the lawsuit, though he is not named as a defendant. The lawsuit singles out several financial transactions between Black and Epstein, however, including a $170 million payment Black made to the financier for reported “tax and estate planning” advice, which victims argued should have been flagged by Bank of America as a suspicious payment. Black also paid a $62 million settlement with the U.S. Virgin Islands in connection with Epstein, in which Black admitted Epstein “used the money Black paid him to partially fund his operations in the Virgin Islands,” the lawsuit notes. Black has long denied any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein or knowledge of his crimes, and has separately been called to testify to the House Oversight Committee about his ties to the financier.

The suit’s plaintiffs argue the monies were used to prop up Epstein’s sprawling human trafficking network, which included children. Bank of America’s surprise settlement comes days after a federal judge in Manhattan ruled last week that Black could be deposed later this month as part of that civil suit. The settlement will likely nix that deposition if the settlement is approved.

and not Comer's. The excerpts I included from the other articles reference the current lawsuit against Bank of America.

Will have to see what Comer does. I expect the victims may still want something that can be released publicly.
