With U.S. Absent, 40 Countries Meet To Figure Out Strait Of Hormuz Reopening

After President Donald Trump effectively washed his hands of the choked-up Strait of Hormuz, leaders of around 40 countries met on Thursday to figure out a way to get the vital shipping channel reopened.

The U.K.-led talks, which included countries such as France, Germany and some Gulf nations, were initiated after Trump on Tuesday told U.S. allies to "go get your own oil" and said there’s "no reason for us" to help get the vital waterway open again.

In a televised address on Wednesday night, Trump doubled down on the position by telling countries that rely on oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz that they "must grab it and cherish it."

To be clear, no U.S. delegates were involved in the virtual summit. Opening the meeting, U.K. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned Iranian "recklessness," and noted the blockage is hurting countries "who were never involved in this conflict."

We clearly need a return to International Law, but it should not be so dominated by established powers that can veto each other's every move.

Get the USA out of the region and the strait will open fairly quickly, at least for ships that have no affiliation with the countries that just started this war.

And I bet Iran would quickly come to some understanding with Saudi Arabia. That understanding might be, "If you let the USA back in to rebuild those bases, we are going to blast them again. We will do our best not to hit any civilian facilities or people. Our fight is not with you. It is with the Great Satan."
