Trumpian smearing of Chicago gets the scrutiny it deserves in a federal courtroom

When confronted with assertions from Trump administration officials regarding Chicago (it’s a “war zone,” a “hellhole,” etc.), most of us who live here understand that the picture being painted of our city bears little resemblance to reality.

That doesn’t stop President Donald Trump and lieutenants such as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem from reiterating these demeaning untruths. What most of us understand is that Trump views Chicago through the lens of his personal animosity toward Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson, both of whom are caustically demeaning of Trump in response.

But it’s one thing to hold forth on Fox News. It’s quite another for the administration to have to back up its rhetoric and fact-challenged narrative in a court of law, where evidence and argument (usually) win the day.

So what transpired last week in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge April Perry was satisfying, at least insofar as reality was allowed at last to make an appearance. Perry questioned Justice Department attorney Eric Hamilton closely during the Thursday hearing, pressing him on exactly what the hundreds of National Guard troops in Chicagoland would be doing. Would they be patrolling streets? Making arrests? Stopping and searching people and vehicles?

Hamilton was unable to answer other than in generalities. “You’re the ones who are deploying them,” Perry said to him. “What are they being trained and deployed to do?”

What, indeed? And even more so, in Portland, where it's even more peaceful///and more silly.

Just because he can? Sorry, NOT FUCKING GOOD ENOUGH to upend people's daily lives, call them into service and send them out because he likes the power and the look.

7. Terrorist gangs are running rampant in the streets of Chicago

They wear masks & tactical gear, are heavily armed, and are abducting people off the street. They launched an assault on an apartment building, broke down doors and ransacked rooms. They hauled people out to the street, some not fully clothed including children, some US citizens, and zip tied their wrists. They recently shot a pastor in the head with pepper bullets, assaulted and abducted a journalist, caused a vehicle accident then dragged the woman from her car and hauled her off.

These terrorist gangs are the source of increased violence, sparking protests by patriotic citizens aghast that something like this can be taking place in the streets of America. The POtuS that sent these lawless thugs has labeled protesters "the enemy within" and wants to use American cities as "training grounds" for a military no longer held to rules of engagement that the "Secretary of War" said will be unleashed to do what it does best: Kill people and break things.

This is not fiction. This is Trump’s America nine months into a four year term. As the pressure mounts and the stakes grow higher, this authoritarian regime supported by the Republican Party and accomplices in the Supreme Court and a large chunk of corporate media will continue to escalate the assaults on political opposition, freedom of expression, public institutions, and Constitutional rule of law.

Nothing less than the survival of American democracy is at stake. It can only be saved by increasing millions of Americans standing up, peacefully united and determined to stop this assault on what our nation's Founders bequeathed to us and for which so many citizen soldiers gave their lives.
