Bad Polling Won't Stop Trump's Authoritarian Project
Andrew Wilson
Throughout Donald Trumps second term, we have seen bad poll after bad poll. His favorability among moderate and independent voters has collapsed. Hispanic voters, disturbed by Trumps deportation campaign and a faltering economy, have done a complete 180. Even Republicansespecially within the core MAGA constituencyare starting to show cracks.
All of that is disastrous for Trump and for Republicans. But bad numbers alone will not miraculously stop us from careening toward the black hole that is Trump 2028. Polling doesnt tell whether we win or lose elections. It measures public mood as best it cana game of telephone where voters tell pollsters, pollsters tell us, and meaning is often distorted along the way.
Voters are angry about prices. Trump, in his dotage, cannot change his mind. Inflation driven by tariffs is here to stay, regardless of what the Supreme Court does. High prices in cities are nothing new, but Trumps tariffs have nationalized the problem, dragging it into the smallest corner of rural America. This is Trumps economy now. He owns it and voters know it.
To their credit, Democrats are largely nailing the affordability argument. But a trust gap still lingers after the Joe Biden presidency. Thats why the combination of affordability and Epstein matters. It isnt just scandal-mongering; its a narrative thats been missing. Trump promised the moon but delivered only oozing corruption and incompetence. Democrats finally have an opportunity to repair a badly damaged brand by making the contrast unavoidable.

(7,396 posts)that's because this is NOT "trumps agenda"... it is PNAC rewritten; it's the Heritage Foundation's P2025. It has a life of its own because there are so many contributors to it and so many who back it. What's even worst is they've got religious buy-in on all these measures. And, just like they justified slavery via the Bible, once upon a time... These minions in high profile offices and deep in the secretarial pool will do the same today.
When PNAC was written, it was acknowledged even then to be something the American public would not want, nor would tolerate. That's why they instituted it little bit by tiny little bit. Frog in boiling water, IOW. Only with trump did they actually publish the damned thing and made it known to all that THIS is what they would be voting for, regardless of who won the election. And that's what no one gets. Even if Kamala had won, GOP would be pushing this with every law and rule they tried to pass. It would be a constant fight the full 4 to 8 years of Kamala's presidency. The fact Starlink made trump president, only eased the way for these GOP mongers to thrust the whole thing upon us all at once. They knew if they didn't, they'd fail again this time. They already had precedence set in the Middle East when they tried to institute it in Iraq... they of the many pallets of disappeared money as bribes for letting this happen. Once again, we screwed the ME, and that WILL come back to bite us in the butt... just as we're busy biting our own butts for agreeing to this mess in our own country. No country who has ever tried the "Austerity" program... regardless of what it was named... has succeeded. Each one has lost economic equity, lifestyle happiness, and is generally no longer known as a "1st world nation"... tho some may only have slipped back to 1-1/2 world nation (I'm thinking of the U.K.).
the GOP and the extremist xtianists and oligarchs knew if they could get this stuff out there, they'd have their butts covered. They knew few, if any (at least of their voters) would read this crap... fewer still would actually believe the government would do extremist crap like this. We were just too dumb a society to see beyond the immediacy of the moment.
May this whole experience be a learning one. The learning curve is gonna be hard to overcome; many of us won't make it; we start off already in dire straits. But if we can create and hang on enough to "community" maybe we can support each other just enough to see it through to the other side.
Having said that, I will have to admit to my inner demon raging here... I want to GIVE it to the MAGAS as hard and heavy as what WE'VE had to endure from THEM for the last decade. No compromise; no mercy. And I refuse any longer to think I'm a bad person for feeling that.
