You could get it without a prescription in the early '60s. We had it around the house when I was a kid, I think for toothache or some such thing.

Yes, my mother used it on my teeth quite often; however, I cannot recall the taste (of it), nor if I had any strange reactions.

From the Internet:
Paregoric, also known as camphorated tincture of opium, is a potent, opiate-agonist liquid medication historically used to treat diarrhea and/or teething problems. Because it contains morphine, paregoric is classified as a controlled substance and can be habit-forming.

At first I was trying to place that term with something very medically technical, butt could not wipe-out anything. Yes, I did Google it before I realized what you meant (in the end).
