The spider's a juvenile orchard orbweaver (Leucauge venusta) and it's the size of a pinhead. I collected the spider outdoors on Sept. 23 and brought it indoors to do some closeups. The spider's on the jar's lid which is atop a page from my daily calendar. This was a random shot I took while setting up for another shot.
Photo of an adult orchard orbweaver, which I posted on September 19.

Here's the freaky part: While viewing a webpage identifying the spider this morning, one dropped down from my laptop's screen! I think it might've been on my spider plant, which I brought indoors yesterday (we had our first frost last night).
The spider's latin name is highlighted at the bottom of the photo; the spider's at upper left. I used my cellphone to take these two shots.

A better view of the spider

Here's my photo showing the distinctive pattern on the adult's abdomen. I'll post more photos of the spider later.

A freaky Friday, indeed!

(6,797 posts)2. I was surprised to find that this is the juvenile stage
My flowerbeds are rotten with the juveniles, but the adults seem to have have disappeared.
Taking closeups of tiny critters has opened a new world to me. Maybe I'll eventually get good at it.
Thanks!
