Julianne Smith
Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO
Crude oil prices spiked after an Iranian attack on a Kuwaiti tanker off Dubai, impacting a world economy already reeling from the fallout of the war. And, while European countries deal with a second major energy shock in less than five years, the White House is venting its frustration. This morning President Trump posted a message to European allies saying, "You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us." Julianne Smith, who served as U.S. Ambassador to NATO under President Biden, joins Bianna Golodryga to discuss.

REPORT: THE ISRAEL-LEBANON FRONT
As war in Iran dominates global news coverage, Israel’s military is escalating its war in Lebanon. More than 1,000 people are dead in Israeli strikes, including at least 125 children and some 52 healthcare workers, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. In northern Israel, residents welcome the push to secure the border from Hezbollah attacks. Correspondent Jim Sciutto reports.

Lynn Harfoush
Executive Committee member, Lebanese National Bloc
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz reiterated today that Israel will "position itself in a security zone" south of the Litani River in Lebanon, with a plan to stay on after the current operation ends. What will this mean for people who live inside the planned "security zone?" Katz says more than 600,000 evacuated residents will be prohibited from returning until northern Israel is declared safe; and that "homes and villages near the border will be destroyed" to remove threats — citing the IDF model in Gaza. Political activist Lynn Harfoush grew up in Beirut’s southern suburbs, in a region controlled by Hezbollah. Once a supporter of the militant group, Harfoush now opposes it — while also opposing Israeli occupation.

Nicholas Lemann
Author, “Returning”
Passover is approaching, and as Jews across the globe prepare to celebrate, many cities show heightened security measures around synagogues amid the war with Iran. Antisemitism has surged since the October 7th attacks on Israel. Columbia University professor Nicholas Lemann, a son of German Jews, delves deep into his family's history in his new book "Returning." Lemann joins Walter Isaacson to speak about reconnecting with his faith — and the wider Jewish community's relationship to Israel.
