Ophir Falk
Foreign Policy Advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
The U.S. launched multiple strikes on Iran this morning as part of a wave of attacks over the past several days. In reimposing its naval blockade, Washington is resuming efforts to force Iran back to the table by threatening its economy. The U.S. Central Command claims the assaults "further degraded Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz." More than 30 civilians have been killed in recent strikes, the Tehran government said today. Iran responded by launching multiple drone and missile strikes on U.S. military assets in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan. Just across the border, Israel is watching all of this and is increasingly at odds with the White House over Iran. President Trump has told Israel's government to withdraw its forces from Lebanon and Syria. It's a major test for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he heads for national elections in late October the first since the October 7th Hamas attack. Ophir Falk, a key foreign policy adviser to Netanyahu, joins Christiane from Jerusalem.
Leslie Vinjamuri
President and CEO of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs
The growing tension in the Strait of Hormuz means renewed risk for the global economy, sparking new fears of surging inflation and mixed messages from Washington. One example is this week's flip-flop from President Donald Trump on imposing cargo fees in the Strait of Hormuz. Rattled allies are now shifting their strategic reliance away from Washington to deal with what Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney calls "a rupture in the world order." Leslie Vinjamuri, foreign policy scholar and head of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, joins the show.
