Effort to change Kansas Supreme Court elections sparks debate ahead of August election

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -- In an upcoming vote just months away, Kansans will have the opportunity to change how justices are added to the Kansas Supreme Court after decades under the current system. The chance for change has led to a lively debate about whether it's time for something new or whether it's best not to fix something some don't see as broken.

Blue and yellow signs are springing up in yards across Wichita, urging people to vote "no" to an amendment that would change Supreme Court elections in Kansas. A "yes" vote would allow people to vote in elections to decide the justices on the high court.

Monday, attorney Gloria Farha-Flentje spoke to Wichita Rotary Club members about why she wants the process to stay the same.

"I support voting 'no' on the constitutional amendment, because we have a wonderful system, and it allows us to have a free and independent court," said Farha-Flentje. "I am fully committed to keeping the process."
