Coldwater extends term lengths for city council members and mayor

City Clerk Shawna Chavez said a Michigan law passed in 2010 allows cities to move elections from odd- to even-numbered years by resolution instead of a charter amendment.

Chavez recommended the change to save money after this year’s November election, when the mayor and four council members ran unopposed.

ust 756 voters participated in the Nov. 4 election, with 661 voting absentee and only 96 casting ballots in person. The election cost the city about $18,000 for setup and inspectors.

Voter turnout was just 8%.
