Some helpers from Nash County are in Venezuela right now, combing through rubble and debris after a massive earthquake rattled communities there. The Nash County Sheriff’s Office is one of the agencies that have jumped into action—with more than just human deputies.

Days after the earthquake, Deputy Jack Thorpe answered the call to fly across the world and help in any way possible. Along with him, combing through dirt, debris, and wreckage, is K-9 Joey.

“They’re finding survivors, they’re finding bodies, it’s just a human, catastrophic event over there,” Sheriff Keith Stone said.

The Nash County Sheriff’s Office is known worldwide for its K-9s, which are trained to detect bodies in mud, water, and under buildings. They’re also trained to find survivors.
