WSDOT opens $123m Marysville interchange, ramps

EVERETT A new interchange connecting south Marysville to I-5 and a nearby state highway, over 10 years in the making, opened to traffic.
The new on- and off-ramps, along with a roundabout, allow drivers to access Marysville via I-5 without crossing railroad tracks, which run through the city at-grade and frequently block traffic. As part of the project, the Washington Department of Transportation also built a new HOV lane on I-5.
Officials hope the new ramps and new lane will help relieve traffic on the congested corridor between Everett and Marysville. About 65,000 vehicles per day use the stretch of highway.
In 2015, the state put $84 million forward to pay for the new interchange, but when it put the project up for bid in 2020, costs had risen and there were no takers. Legislators then provided another $30 million in 2022 to keep up with inflation and construction began in 2023. The total cost of the project amounted to $123 million.
