College endowments soar across Washington state after pandemic-era market gains
The University of Washington ranks as the wealthiest university in the state, with $4.92 billion in endowment assets in fiscal year 2023.
Thats according to a recent analysis by The Business Journals of U.S. Department of Education data.
Endowments at all U.S. colleges and universities with available data were up a collective 79% year over year between 2022 and 2023 and up 242% over 10 years. The pandemic-era stock market gains produced exceptional results for some schools, but it also widened the gap between the wealthiest schools and others.
Overall, Washington higher ed institutions, including community and technical colleges, grew endowment assets by 62.8% over the 10-year period. Washingtons universities and colleges collectively held $9.28 billion in endowments at the end of fiscal year 2023. It translated to $55,726 per full-time undergraduate student in Washington.
