Fire at YWCA home in Bremerton leaves 10 people displaced

A fire early Thursday morning in Bremerton displaced three adults and seven children, including an infant, who were living at a home operated by the YWCA of Kitsap County.

The fire started on Feb. 19 in the attic and Bremerton Fire Department crews responded around 6:35 a.m. All of the residents were safely evacuated, but damage through a ceiling into the home and smoke damage through the home meant everything inside was lost, according to YWCA.

“These families have already experienced immeasurable hardship,” Harriette Bryant, CEO of YWCA Kitsap County, said. “In a matter of minutes, they lost their home, belongings and the sense of security they were working so hard to rebuild.”

The house was a transitional living facility, where YWCA clients stay anywhere from a week to six months as more permanent, safe housing is located. Bryant said a timeline to repair the house, which is at an undisclosed location, is projected at 8 months to a year.
