(5,060 posts)account. They aren't federal agencies where they have the means and the responsibility to do so. Moreover, imagine having to create a team for each country in the world to find out who's really dead. They have enough problem with the endless bots and fake personalities already.

(55,808 posts)They slow down the user experience. I guess they don't remove them because they enhance eyeball metrics. If there's anything worse than a site with 15% inactive accounts from dead users, it's 15% fewer accounts.

(5,060 posts)They actually like that as they can claim to have 1 billion accounts even though half of that is inactive. I see it in social media sites and game advertisements all the time. It creates an illusion of popularity while their active user base are much smaller. They are also in their annual briefings for investors. They love inflated numbers.

(9,696 posts)Dead people on social media don't post, so no one is affected by their account living on forever. Dead/inactive accounts don't slow down social media, they just sit there.
