My mom used to make this cake. It was quite delicate, so delicate that a slammed door during cooking could ruin it.

(3,514 posts)it isn't my favorite. I thinks it's a taste and texture thing- it looked pretty, but to me was sort of...marshmallowie gummy and hard to cut with a fork. (And i am not a big fan of marshmallows, except in s'mores, lol). Seemed to taste better with fruit and sauce poured over it.
Give me a good chocolate cake over angel food cake any day!

(12,562 posts)For me, she'd either cut it in half and fill it with fresh strawberries and whipped cream OR frost the top with marshmallow fluff and sprinkle it with peanut butter chips (my favorite!).
After dad was diagnosed with high cholesterol, angel food cake was the most frequently served type of cake at family dinners.

(18,190 posts)They have changed since I was a lot younger. It used to come with a favor crystal for an extra kick. It was probably a citrus acid ball.
They don't go through the extra steps, now it's dump the cake mix in a bowl and add the water and bake.
It's awesome your mom could make them from scratch.
Oh yeah, as stated above I love to toast them in the oven before eating a slice.
