but I experienced the most amazing thing last night. Ended up being a late evening doing grocery shopping. It was probably 8:30 when I got home. Dark, just a light breeze blowing through the trees. My house isn't fancy... it's one of the post WWII housing neighborhoods (at least, that's what it looks like to me.) The house desperately needs painting and repair work, and hubby is doing his best with the yardwork, as I'm unable to help him. But you have to understand... we didn't buy the house *because* of the house. We bought the house because of the trees. We have a plethora of trees in our yard. All kinds of trees... oaks, maples, evergreens, bradford pears, white birch. We've got a crabapple tree and a walnut tree. We really don't have much of a yard... it's all trees!!! (LOL) The cops came by once and bitched that we needed to cut down all the trees on the street side of our house. I looked at them like they were crazy. Told them did they ever think we bought the house BECAUSE of the trees?! And no one needed to be peeping into my laundry room at any point in time. The trees were staying. That's the last I heard of that, thank goodness!
Anyway, I was sitting out on the porch, feeling the earth beneath my feet and for a few moments enjoying the feeling of centeredness, when all of a sudden a cacophony erupted around me. First one owl hooted, and then another, and another one answering one of those. In all, grandson and I counted 5 separate "voices" of owls. They were all Barred Owls, and I never saw one as it was way too dark, but I sat out there and listened to them having the most amazing conversation among themselves. And you know what? For over an hour, I never once thought about trump, miller, or any of the evil that's happening globally. I just kept my feet firmly planted on the good earth and gave myself over to the hooting of the owls. I even tried hooting, myself! I did much better at the ending trill than I thought I would... it seemed like at least one owl might actually have hooted back at me!
As enchanted as I was by them, I made sure all my cat babies were safe in the house, and I gave a walkaround the house just to make sure there were no other small creatures who could become prey. Voles and moles were on their own, tho, I'm afraid...

(155,377 posts)Well worth the read. I enjoyed seeing it unfold.
It may not be a "pet" story--but it's great nonetheless.

(3,095 posts)His name is Spot. It's probably the great grandfather x 4, but every time I hear his call, I say 'there's Spot'. My dog always looks up when I do it, looking for him. Original Spot was first spotted when we moved here in mid 1980's. 💕

(6,785 posts)Was doing a backyard bird journal at the time. Took me a bit to find out what it was.. I'd never seen one before, and all I could begin to guess was some kind of woodpecker (which I think they are related?). Cool birds!
If I can get a handle finally on the inside of my house again, I want to set up my birdfeeders for winter and start a bird journal for here in Leavenworth. I've got catbirds out the wazoo here! (LOL) And I know I've seen some chickadees and a few titmouse. And we have gorgeous cardinals.
Grandson and girlfriend are coming home late this evening, so I've got some free rein time in getting a pot of chili finished for them. I plan to head to the front porch and see if the owl song is in chorus tonight, too...

It is so relaxing.

(6,785 posts)I know there are a few who post here who are, and I read their messages with wonder and awe. When hubby and I were talking about if, how, and when to become ex-pats, Costa Rica was my first word, based on what I'd read here...
I used to work for the Saudis as a liaison assistant and one of my majors I was friends with had a parrot. Loved the parrot, and the parrot loved my little 4-year-old daughter. But every time I came in, the bird went straight for my toes! (LOL)

(6,785 posts)truly, tho... would love to experience the culture. I lived on the deep South Side of San Antonio when I was based at Lackland AFB. Everyone around me spoke Spanish only or broken English. My daughter learned Spanish (TexMex) at a very early age from the kids she played with. I know it's not exactly the same in the other countries in Central America, but the history, architecture, the ruins, the wildlife... they speak to my soul. Enjoy the quiet ambience of the wildlife...
