Related: About this forumI'm dreading tonight's fireworks.
My poor dogs will be so upset! I bought some hemp-melatonin treats to help calm them and did a test run last night. The treats didn't seem to help at all. The directions say one treat for their size but don't mention frequency.
Poor babies!

(74,292 posts)maybe cheer the booms a bit. when we feel sorry for them, its very, very reinforcing.
a good, long lasting, irresistible chewy can help. like a knuckle bone.
at least ignore it the best u can. my bully hates thunder and all booms. she gets no pity. its best for her.

(10,756 posts)Even with drugs and a thundershirt, he was still very unhappy. The one thing that has helped was a happy hoodie, which goes over their ears, and lessens the noise. You might be able to fashion one with something you have around the house.

I used to give my kitty a melatonin compound from the pet store. It did not help much, and the price has jumped 50% in one year. Now I give him a catnip/passion flower mix that did seem to help. He snuggled close to me all night. I wanted to smack my neighbors. .we have a fireworks ban because of the heat and drought, but that did not stop the idiots.
I wish I knew of something equally helpful for puppers.

(3,394 posts)From my front yard I could see 4 communities shooting them off, some very close. I'd given my pups a double dose of the hemp-melatonin treats and they didn't help at all. Luckily it was over by 10 and we all settled in.
They seem okay this morning. Thanks for asking.

(3,394 posts)I fill bathroom sized dixie cups with whipped cream for them. Most of my dogs just lick out the cream but one of them devours the entire dixie cup!
