run away
it occurs to me every now and then that i could run away
ever since i walked through that door over fifty years ago
the thought comes to my mind and lingers what holds on
is the unknown a fear a worry a responsibility to someone
in times of doubt i look out that door ready to pack a bag
ready to step lively to catch a bus or take an unknown risk
a clear path before me and nothing left behind to go back
sleepless at night restless in the day to writhe and wrestle
security holds me duty commands me no second choices
caught on a narrow way perhaps escape is a mere illusion
the pot boils over killing the fire and a foul stench arises
a scent of sweat and unwashed feet driving dreams away
temptation tickles with its evil tongue and i glance furtive
no one knows no one suspects as again the thought arrives
