Tammy Duckworth in a few words (if that is even possible) What-A-Woman...

United States Senator and Military Veteran

Monumental Achievement: U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth leads a life filled with firsts.

She is the first Thai-American woman elected to Congress, the first person born in Thailand elected to Congress, the first disabled veteran elected to Congress, the first female double amputee in the Senate, and the first senator to give birth while in office.

She lost both of her legs and some mobility in an arm during the Iraq War when the U.S. Army helicopter she was piloting was hit with rocket-propelled grenade.

Having an abiding commitment to veterans, she served as director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs for three years before becoming assistant secretary for public and intergovernmental affairs at the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs from 2009 to 2011.

She served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016.
