Luckily no one was hurt, because it was after school had let out for the day, but there was band practice going on. Some of my friends were in the locker room, chaging their uniforms when they smelled smoke. I had a doctor's appointment that day, or I would have been there too.
The fire department determined it was arson, and they announced a few days later that they had found the perpetrator, but they never released the name. So likely it was a student or a past student who did it. Also likely it was a child of wealthy church donors, the way it was hushed up.
Given that a number of the teachers were often cruel, we all figured it was someone, who went over the edge because of something done to them. I was really upset because one of my friends or the fireman could have been hurt. It wasn't their fault we had some mean teachers.
We had to have classes in quickly assembled temporary classrooms the following year, in the gym as some of the rooms in the older section burned and had to be repaired. The smell of smoke lingered for a couple of years.
