First, was the fact that the recruiters, if you enlisted, would promise you anything to meet their outrageous quotas.
A friend of mine, was an electronics geek and since he was 12 had built all kinds of heath kit electronic items, etc. Also, a real radio nut, with his ham license, etc etc etc. A guy who would have been awesome at repairing anything electronic, ground troop radios, air craft electronics, the list is endless.....a perfect fit............
They assigned him to being a cook...............
And, we must not forget, in the fall of 67, when all they were interested in was 250,000 ADDITIONAL warm bodies, in preparation for the Rumored Tet Offensive. The truth was revealed much later about the infamous "McNAMARA MORONS"............and how he lowered the IQ requirements, decreased the training times, and GAVE no consideration to any kind of aptitude..............
Worst of all, he told the recruiters to work hardest on Blacks, because they were the easiest pickings.........I seem to recall that the whites represented a much greater number of Soldiers and Sailors overall, but 10?% of whites were casualties, and up to 20?% of Blacks were casualties.........
More info on *McNamara's Morons* on google.......bet most people here never even knew about this Charlie Foxtrot by him and LBJ.
