Some things are just formalities. the Senate's confirmation of Presidential appointments, though, is not a formality. It is written in the Constitution and is a very, very powerful thing. The Senate confirms. The House has no role in that, so it is irrelevant with regard to appointments.

As for House and Senate members talking to each other, they don't really do all that much of that, except when both houses have to act on something. Then they might chat about it. Not officially, though. Meetings between the two houses of Congress are not the norm.
