MAGA Senator Slammed For Cruel Proposal To Limit Where SNAP Recipients Can Spend Their Benefits [View all]
Iowa Republican Senator Joni Ernst was criticized after she told Fox Business about her new proposal to prevent Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from being used at fast food restaurants, which she's named the McSCUSE ME Act.
The idea that SNAP recipients are freely spending their benefits on fast food simply as a matter of convenience is inaccurate, however.
Whats actually at issue is the Restaurant Meals Program, an optional state initiative that permits a limited group of SNAP participantssuch as people experiencing homelessness, those with disabilities, or individuals without access to cooking facilitiesto purchase prepared meals at approved restaurants using their benefits.

The loss of SNAP is a result of the Trump administration's failure to spend contingency funds to feed people on the program, a decision that is resulting in a nationwide hunger crisis impacting millions of families.
Although SNAP benefits are administered by individual states, the program is funded by the federal government, which was shuttered until the government shutdown was finally resolved last month. The budget impasse kicked off after the GOP refused to negotiate with Democrats over Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies that were due to expire.

Joni Ernst Issues Non-Apology for Joke About People Dying Due to GOP Medicaid Cuts
If her constituents dont want to die when Republicans cut Medicaid, Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst suggests they should simply embrace Jesus Christ
Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) doubled down on Saturday on her flippant remarks about people dying due to Medicaid cuts in a new Instagram video that appeared to be recorded in a cemetery.
During a town hall on Friday, Ernst was pressed about President Donald Trumps tax bill, which would slash Medicaid in order to help fund a new round of tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. The legislation is expected to force 10 million people off Medicaid, the government health insurance program for low-income and disabled Americans.
When an audience member shouted, People are going to die, Ernst responded: Well, we all are going to die. Her unfunny joke drew headlines around the country, and was featured prominently on the front page of The Des Moines Register on Saturday.
