Besides, the question was "if Hitler never existed" and it's a bit vague as to whether some ghoul in the past would have maintained their lead, or whether it was a contest post-Hitler.

I interpreted that as Hitler paving the way for future tyrants, implying that later ones were trying to outdo him, a kind of "Dante's steamshovel" to go even lower in hell. That's why I made a disclaimer for his predecessors.

And I stopped going back past Caligula. Did I miss Nero?

Hitler was successful at tyranny, but nothing lasts forever.
