The guy was 86 and in poor health. He took no precautions and considered it better for their cause to be martyred than to simply die from cancer.

Khamenei wasn’t merely the head of state, he was the head of the religion, akin to the pope.

This whole “plan” as such was harebrained. Nothing will inspire religious fanatics to fight harder than the assassination of their messiah figure.
