Kayfabe is the tacit agreement between professional wrestlers and their audience to pretend that staged wrestling matches, characters, and storylines are genuinely real. Originating from old carny and wrestling slang, the term also refers to the act of staying in character and protecting the illusions of the "wrestling business".
