(2,338 posts)Democrats have not "sat back on 40-year-old laurels"... and to say there has been no real fight completely ignores recent legislative history.
House and Senate Democrats have put up a massive, unified fight to protect and restore the Voting Rights Act. Every single congressional Democrat signed on to co-sponsor the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. These bills were specifically designed to undo the damage done by conservative Supreme Court rulings and create national baselines to stop state-level voter suppression. Democrats brought these bills to the floor, voted for them, and fought to pass them.
The reason they are not law right now is NOT because (as you claim) the Democrats lack the fighting willpower --- it is because we hit the brick wall of a unified Republican filibuster in the Senate. There is a massive difference between losing a legislative battle due to a lack of votes and "not putting up a fight."
Blaming the lawmakers who introduced, championed, and voted for voting rights protections for the obstruction of the Republicans who blocked them fundamentally misplaces the blame. The fight is happening every day, but we need the majorities to win it. To falsely claim otherwise only serves to suppress the vote for Democrats which benefits the GOP.
Once again, Bluetus... it feels like the goalposts keep shifting, scripted strawmen keep popping up, and and we are responding to two completely different conversations. Since we are just going around in circles, I am going to leave it here. Have a great week!
