(21,283 posts)into two distinct areas both within the immediate territory of the Jewish people's ancient ancestral homeland. One parcel was allotted to the Jewish Agency and the other allotted to the Arab Higher Committee.
The Jewish Agency established the State of Israel on their allotted portion on the same day that the British Mandate ended. The Arab Higher Committee had been stamping its feet and holding its breath for months, refusing to meet with or even recognize the UN Special Committee on Palestine. In a hubris-driven snit, the Arab Higher Committee's allied counties and kingdoms invaded the new State of Israel to try to take what was not theirs. As per usual, they lost the war that they had started.
New boundaries were drawn in the course of hammering out armistice agreements brokered directly by the UN through its chief negotiator, Dr. Ralph Bunche, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
It was through these agreements that Egypt (not Palestinian Arabs) took control of Gaza, and Jordan (not Palestinian Arabs) took control of the West Bank. None of the Arab countries involved made any effort whatsoever to try to establish a state for the Palestinian Arabs who had lived in the British Mandate. They simply didn't care.

Fun fact: In the run up to the dissolution of the British Mandate, the Brits were working hand in glove with King Abullah, the first King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, to insure that (Trans)Jordan would take control of the land allotted to the Arab Higher Committee.
Why? Because Great Britain was rightfully worried that Hitler's buddy, the genocidal Grand Mufti Hajj Amin al-Husseini, would seize control of the territory.
