28. Creatures of the id

The people who thirst for expression of their worst impulses of rape and murder and domination have received permission from the Electoral College to actually and vicariously live their fantasies.

I'll be damned if the Reich Wing didn't employ REALLY skilled psychologists in planning this takeover. I'm talking political psychologists from the CIA, practical psychologists from advertising, gambling and addiction experts, in-group/out-group dynamics, the whole suite of experts. Combine all this skill with billions of dollars and a wholly-owned media landscape feeding overt and subliminal cues into a population of oppressed and suffering people who know their lot in life is getting worse year after year, then wonder why people "vote against their interests".

A population of otherwise decent people (along with the bad people) have been trained to enact their dark dark fantasies, like the audience hoping the murderer gets away with it in Psycho (#13).

Very few human decisions are made rationally. Emotions trump cogitation. At times, we have the positive emotions of love and empathy, generosity and care. Under the oligarchy, the powerful raw emotions from the id are nourished into bloom; love becomes an in-group masturbation, and empathy becomes fear of the Other. Fight/flight dominates and serves the ruling class.

We need to recognize that these selfish impulses of the id have survival value in nature "red in tooth and claw". I doubt if we can overcome this with sweet reason. As a second choice, I suggest looking behind the curtain and directing the creatures of the id at the true authors of our misery.
