The Posse Comitatus Act bars federal troops from participating in civilian law enforcement except when expressly authorized by law. This nearly 150-year-old law embodies an American tradition that sees military interference in civilian affairs as a threat to both democracy and personal liberty. However, recent events have revealed dangerous gaps in the law’s coverage that Congress must address. Brennan center interpretation

The Posse Comitatus Act is a federal law that limits the use of federal military personnel to enforce domestic policies within the United States. It was enacted in 1878 after the end of Reconstruction and expanded to cover the Air Force in 1956 and the Navy, Marine Corps, and Space Force in 2021. Wikipedia definition
