Neither the Department of Homeland Security nor the GEO Group, the company that runs the facility, responded Thursday to requests for comment.

Eyes on ICE, an activist group that monitors conditions at the Newark immigration detention center, said reports began coming in Tuesday as the heat wave intensified. Detainees reported that air conditioning was out in one housing unit capable of holding hundreds of people.

Newark is considered an urban heat island, where asphalt, highways and industrial activity can drive temperatures higher than in surrounding areas. The Delaney Hall facility is located in Newark’s industrial section. The city issued a Code Red alert Tuesday for the heat wave.

Eyes on ICE said it has continued to receive reports that improper ventilation and dirty drinking water have exacerbated conditions, with dehydration posing an increased risk.
