University of Chicago bans use of phones laptops for law students to curb AI use [View all]

Beginning this fall, first year law students at the University of Chicago will be banned from using phones, tablets and laptops in class. This is a new policy at the university to curb AI use.

Some of the feedback that was received is that the university wants to ensure students learn to think critically, strategically, and independently without relying on artificial intelligence.

The university will teach students AI, but that will be in upper level courses.

Faculty will be able to experiment and develop their own AI policies for elective courses, however phones and laptops will still be banned for test taking.
