The AI Revolution: Our Political Class Needs to Be Up to the Task [View all]

Katie Phang

As we ponder what the future holds for Americans in 2026, particularly with our upcoming midterms, I ask myself: Does our current class of politicians have what it takes to lead this country?

Some background: my husband recently shared with me a podcast by Howard Marks on the raging debate of whether the current Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution is a bubble. For those that don’t know – I certainly didn’t – Marks is one of the masters of the universe in the investment world. And based on his background, it seems he’s been around long enough to see any number of rises and collapses in our financial markets.

Now, I’m not here to tell you whether Marks is correct in his commentary as to whether AI is a bubble. That’s not my bailiwick. What DID capture my attention though – and, I suspect, others’ attention who listened to the podcast or read his note – was his postscript in which he shared his personal concerns about the societal impacts of AI if it is anywhere near as powerful as many think it will be.

Marks makes a scary point: AI may be a labor-saving technology on a scale we have never seen before. And while the West Coast tech elites/Trump bootlickers like David Sacks keep touting the productivity gains AI will achieve, Marks counters with the obvious question that keeps getting ignored: How are people supposed to afford the abundance AI creates?
