The five most commonly used letters in the English language are (in order) E,A,R,I, and O. per
Letter Frequencies in the English Language (https://www3.nd.edu/~busiforc/handouts/cryptography/letterfrequencies.html). so when I see the results of playing SLATE, I start looking for words containing some combination of R/I/O and try to find a word that uses at least two of these. OPERA uses O/R and it is the only word I found that uses two letters from among R/I/O, so I played that.
